Henwood Britter & Caney is one of Durban’s oldest firms of attorneys, having been established in 1923. Whilst the partners have changed a number of times over the years, the original name of the firm has been retained in proud recognition of the accomplishments of our founding partners. The first senior partner, CL Henwood, was a knowledgeable and well respected member of the profession whostayed in practice as an attorney for many years before his ultimate retirement. Britter, on the other hand, after a few decades in practice, left the attorneys profession to become a judge in the first Native Appeal Court, as it was known at the time. The most well know of the original partners, however, was LR Caney who went on to become a judge in the then Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and is the author of the authoritative works,The Law of Suretyship in South Africa and The Law of Novation.
Whilst the years have passed, the essential character of the firm has not changed. We have always had fewer than four partners and have focused on building an individualised professional relationship with our clients, so as to develop a clear understanding of each of our client’s needs, with a view to providing advice and assistance in relation to the diverse range of legal issues that arise in both the personal and commercial environment.
Over specialisation can lead to lack of a holistic understanding of the client’s affairs that is essential in providing innovative solutions and identifying potential areas of risk. We strive towards the development of a one-on-one relationship with our clients and aim to offer as comprehensive a service as possible. We recognise that after all, our own success in practice is dependent entirely upon the success of our clients.
